What's your role?
I am a Full Stack Developer for Harled with a Grand Poobah as the Mobile Mastermind. I have become the resident expert for everything mobile and I strive to make the mobile experience as friendly as possible without adding extra work to maintain it. Mobile is only a drop in the bucket of my responsibilities. While the main portion of my work is on the Hangar platform, I am responsible for taking ideas and problems and expertly crafting them into reality and solutions.
What is the secret to realizing a successful software project?
The secret to a successful software project is to get started so that you can fail… fail again… and fail maybe a few more thousand times. When all is said and done you can finally put a pretty bow on the pile of trash that you created! The trick here is that one person's trash is another person's treasure. Even if you don't find that one person right away, you will still learn plenty along the way and can keep making better trash to make the treasure.
What emerging technology or industry are you most interested in?
I think the augmented reality (AR) sector is a super exciting technology and has become a niche little hobby of mine. While the field feels to still be in its infancy, the things you can do with it already blur the lines between the virtual world and our own reality. Virtual reality is a close cousin to AR but the hardware barrier to entry is a little discouraging. On the other hand, you can take off running in AR using the phone you carry with you every day.
A little more on the reality side, I'm also looking forward to seeing where the world of home manufacturing goes. I've gotten myself a 3D printer and a small CNC machine which have really opened up doors in my creativity. My proudest builds would probably be a "periodic table of elements Bluetooth lamp" or the time I saved hundreds of dollars by printing replacement parts for a washing machine.
What's your word of the day?
Try. You'll get pretty far towards whatever goal you might have if you at least try or you may even find new opportunities you never even considered. Trying and failing is more common than people would like to think, but throwing an extra try onto the end leads you even closer to success. There's a great quote that goes: "The master has failed more times than the beginner has tried". And worse comes to worse, saying I tried makes a great excuse!
What is your vision for the future?
I would love to see a future where #DigitalAF sets the standard for air force tech around the world. It would be pretty cool to see the RCAF become a software leader and have other countries look to Canada to see the way we are doing things.
